My favorite quotes from book:

  • God I don't want them in heaven. I want them here!
  • I used to be a cop, a husband,a father,a Christian, What am I when I've lost all those markers except Christian? And When God lets you lose all that defines you, what does it mean to be a Christian?
  • You've got to love a man who loves your pet.
  • Lord, your Word says our times are in Your hands. Will I ever be in a situation where my timing and a guy's time- Greg's timing-are in sync?
  • God, if You're there, don't let me let her down.
  • Inspire of the new complications I haven't sorted out yet, Lord, life's good. Not great exactly, but good.
  • God, are You there? Can you hear me? I am so scared!
  • My issue is lack of trust, not guilt.

She serves him breakfast at her café every morning … but he never seems to notice her.

Carrie Carter’s small café in Seaside, New Jersey, is populated with a motley crew of locals … although Carrie only has eyes for Greg Barnes. He’s recovering from a vicious crime that three years ago took the lives of his wife and children—and from the year he tried to drink his reality away. While her heart does a happy Snoopy dance at the sight of him, he never seems to notice her, to Carrie’s chagrin.

When Carrie’s dishwasher is killed and her young waitress disappears, Greg finds himself drawn into helping Carrie solve the mysteries … and into her life. But when Carrie’s own painful past becomes all to present, her carefully constructed world begins to sink.

Will the fragile relationship she’s built with Greg implode from the weight of the baggage they both carry? (back of the book)

My Overview: When Carrie's dishwasher ends up dead, and her other server ends up missing she can’t help but wonder if there is some sort of connection. Carrie & her younger sister Lindsey own "Carrie's Cafe"! Lindsey loves to bake and Carrie loves to see her little sister happy, safe and content! Both Carrie & Lindsey fled from their home at a young age! They left behind a past that they hoped would never find them. Carrie becomes a "mother like" figure to Lindsey. Now it’s years later and they are settled in & life seems pretty good. Their Life is going along at a normal pace, when tragedy strikes. Has Carrie's past caught up with her or is she just imagining these things?

Carrie has her sights set on the local property manager, Greg Barnes. However, Greg, is a recovering alcoholic and getting over the loss of his wife and children. He finds it difficult to let anyone into his life, much less trust anyone. Through the tragedy, Carrie and Greg find one another & lean on each other for comfort and support. However, when questions are asked about Carrie's past, will she trust Greg enough to tell him what scares her most? Will she trust Greg enough to tell him why she is running from her past or will she allow this to come between them?

My Thoughts & Comments: This book was a bit difficult to get into when I first started to read it. I got confused when there were two characters with the same name, different spellings. However once I sorted it out, I begin to understand that leaving out details was all part of the authors plan. This got you to pay attention to what was really going on.A mystery we always want to try to solve before we finish the book, or at least I do anyway!Shadows on the Sand is an intriguing story about two runaways Carrie & Lindsey Carter and how they have tried to leave their past behind. I found Carrie's Café to be a quiet little place where locals gather to enjoy good food & fellowship. My mouth watered as I read about the grilled cinnamon buns that were slathered in butter & served up hot and fresh. Everything from lemon meringue pie to a chocolate raspberry torte served with a fresh hot cup of coffee! It was enough to make you want to dive into the pages & ask for an order!

This is the first time reading a book by Author Gayle Roper!I enjoyed the life that she poured into her characters! She made them real and believable. What many aren't mentioning in their reviews is that in this book they talk about a cult, called The Pathway!Without giving away the story, the cult plays a very real part of some of the characters lives, even though it is fictional in content! I enjoyed this book and found it a very interesting read!
