Charlotte Beck may be entering adulthood, but she can’t seem to keep to her stubborn, independent spirit from bucking social protocol. Fed up with her behavior, Charlotte’s father Daniel pressures her to settle into a nice marriage despite knowing she is set on going to college. Then Daniel sees Charlotte with the handsome but annoying English astronomer Alex Hambly, and everything changes.
Though Alex and Charlotte can barely stand one another, Daniel offers them a deal they can’t refuse: if they agree to marry, he will save Alex’s family from financial ruin and grant Charlotte the freedom to go to college. Reluctantly the couple agrees, but in private they plot to annul the marriage as soon as possible.
But when Alex’s feelings change and he refuses to dissolve their contract, will Charlotte find a way out of her vows? Or will she discover that maybe this marriage isn’t so inconvenient after all? (back of the book)
The year is 1887,the place is London, England & Charlotte Beck is about to make her unofficial debut into society. However, Charlotte Beck does not intend to let any stuffy social protocol spoil her plans for her life. Yes and what Charlotte wants, Charlotte usually gets!

Charlotte & Alex conspire together & agree to this marriage with the idea that they will secretly get it annulled in the near future. Alex can become the astronomer he has always dreamed of being & Charlotte can go off to college to study business. As we know things can change & soon they find themselves in very compromising positions. Can they pull off the greatest act & have others believe that they are a happily married couple with a bright future? Or will the young couple be found out to be a sham & their plans forever foiled?
My Thoughts & Comments: This is the first book that I have ever read by Kathleen Y'Barbo. I was delighted to discover the character of Charlotte Beck as a whimsical menace that is forever finding herself in hot water! There is a particular humorist scene, where Charlotte decides to burn some of her under garments & her hair bow catches on fire in the process! I laughed so hard I had to put down the book , find a tissue & wipe the tears from my eyes. I found Charlotte amusing & yet refreshing & a bit ahead of her time. She will always do the unexpected & she is not afraid to take risks, as long as it doesn't involve love. Ah, Yes, you'll have to read the story to find out why Charlotte would rather run from love then fall in love. You won't be disappointed, I know I wasn't!
